Anders Berensson Architects

Anders Berensson Architects has been commissioned by the Stockholm Centre Party to design a covering for one of the city’s most central locations. Stadsgården, positioned between Södermalm and the waterfront, is a site with immense potential but is currently dominated by vehicular traffic and logistics related to the Viking Line terminal. Despite the presence of attractions like Fotografiska and Stadsgårdsterminalen, the area remains difficult to access and constrained in its development.

The design concept has been to transform Stadsgården into a vibrant urban district by covering the busy road with a series of terraced buildings that step down from the cliffs toward the water. This solution preserves the panoramic views from Södermalm’s heights while creating new opportunities for waterfront city life.

The buildings’ irregular forms are carefully adapted to the topography of the cliff, with warm timber facades that harmonize with the surrounding landscape. The roofscape will serve as a new pedestrian walkway, extending from Slussen to Fåfängan, and creating a continuous, coherent pathway through the area. The stepped buildings will house residential units, offices, and public spaces, while the ground floor will be filled with commercial spaces, fostering an active and attractive waterfront environment.

To further strengthen the connection between the city and the water, staircases will be integrated into the design, leading down from the cliff to Stadsgården. These stairs will link various nodes along the waterfront, such as a park, a small boat marina, a cold bathhouse, and a performance stage. The new development will integrate seamlessly with the existing landmarks, Fotografiska and Stadsgårdsterminalen, reinforcing their significance within the area.

The aim of the project is to create a lively and accessible district, where people can meet, work, and experience the unique interplay between urban life and water in Stockholm.
